Whole-Home Remodel Timeline Guide: What 8 Months Actually Looks Like

A Whole-Home Remodel Is a Marathon
If you've never lived through one, the timeline can feel mysterious. Here's what an 8-month whole-home remodel actually looks like at Vision Homes.
Month 1: Discovery & Design Concept
- On-site walkthrough and measurements
- 2–3 design concepts
- Initial selections (cabinets, counters, flooring direction)
- Preliminary engineering review for any structural changes
You spend a lot of time looking at floor plans and Pinterest boards in this phase.
Month 2: Design Development & Permits
- Final selections locked
- Construction documents finalized
- Structural engineering complete
- Title 24 energy compliance
- Permits submitted to city
You'll make finish decisions almost daily this month. Bring snacks to your design meetings.
Month 3: Permit Plan Check + Final Pre-Con
- City reviews and issues corrections
- We respond, resubmit, get approval
- Final pre-construction meeting with you, project manager, and foreman
- Move-out date set (most clients move out for whole-home remodels)
Month 4: Demo + Rough Trades
- Site protection
- Demo to studs (sometimes to slab)
- Discoveries logged and addressed (old wiring, plumbing, foundation issues)
- Framing for any new walls or openings
- Plumbing, electrical, HVAC rough-in
- Window and door installation
Month 5: Inspections + Insulation + Drywall
- Rough inspections (framing, plumbing, electrical, mechanical)
- Insulation
- Drywall hang
- Tape, mud, texture
- Prime
Month 6: Cabinets, Tile, Counters
- Cabinet installation
- Tile installation (floors and walls)
- Countertop template, fabricate, install
- Trim and millwork
- Interior doors
Month 7: Finishes
- Paint
- Plumbing fixtures
- Electrical fixtures and lighting
- Hardware
- Appliance install
- Flooring (if not done earlier)
- Final HVAC trim
Month 8: Punch List + Final Inspection + Move-In
- Touch-ups
- Final adjustments
- Cleaning

- Walkthrough with you
- Punch list completion
- Handoff
Realistic Variances
Add 4–8 weeks if:
- You're significantly enlarging the footprint
- You have major foundation work
- You're adding or rebuilding a roof
- Custom cabinets are coming from a small shop
Subtract 4 weeks if:
- You stay in the existing footprint
- You keep the kitchen and bath layouts (no plumbing relocation)
- You use stock cabinets
Budget Implications of Speed
Faster does not necessarily mean cheaper. Cramming a whole-home into 5 months often means overtime labor, premium-shipped materials, and stressed sub-trades that lead to quality issues. Our experience: 7–9 months is the value-optimized window for a typical whole-home remodel.
Living Through It
If you're staying in the home:
- Set up a temporary kitchen in a bedroom or garage
- Designate one "clean zone" the construction never touches
- Keep your air filters fresh — dust travels
- Plan a hotel weekend mid-project for sanity
If you're moving out:
- Negotiate a 9-month furnished rental with month-to-month flexibility at the end
- Store furniture in a climate-controlled unit
- Update your address with critical accounts
