Construction

Know what happens on site — from prep to final inspection.

Home/Learning Center/Construction

Construction is the stage where plans become a physical home, and knowing what to expect turns a stressful few months into a manageable, even exciting, process. A well-run ADU build follows a predictable sequence: site preparation, foundation, framing, the roof and weather envelope, rough-in of plumbing and electrical, inspections at each milestone, then insulation, drywall, finishes, and a final inspection that clears the unit for occupancy. Understanding that rhythm helps you see progress for what it is and know when key decisions are due.

How long it takes depends on the type of build. A garage conversion, which reuses an existing structure, moves faster than a ground-up detached unit that starts with a new foundation. Site conditions matter too — access, grading, and utility distances can add or remove weeks. What consistently protects a timeline is coordination: keeping trades in the right order, scheduling inspections so work isn't reopened, and solving problems before they cascade.

This is the part of the journey where an owner-led builder makes the biggest difference. At Vision ADU, the same people who sold you the project are involved in building it — Barak, Jaime, and Iris stay hands-on through construction, and our bilingual English/Spanish team means clear communication on every job site. Drawing on Barak and Jaime's 30+ years of combined construction experience, we sequence the work to hold the schedule and to pass inspections cleanly the first time, which is the real driver of an on-time finish.

The guides in this stage walk through preparing your property for construction, how long an ADU takes to build, and a detailed how-to-build series covering architecture and design, city submittal, the start of construction, and final inspection. Read them so you know what each phase involves and what your builder should be handling on your behalf. When you're ready to start, book a consultation and we'll walk you through the exact sequence for your project — and then execute it.
